Grampians Health Open Access agreements

2025

Grampians Health Library is pleased to announce a Read and Publish agreement with Springer, Oxford and OVID/Lippincott Williams Wilkins/Wolters Kluwer for 2025, which includes a limited open access publishing component. This provides Grampians Health staff with the opportunity to publish their work as open access in eligible journals at no additional cost.

Publishing your research as open access enhances its visibility and impact by making it freely available to a global audience. We encourage researchers planning submissions to Springer journals to act quickly to take advantage of this valuable opportunity.

Open Access

What Is Open Access (OA)?

Open Access (OA) refers to scholarly research that is freely available online - no paywalls, no subscriptions, no barriers. The goal? To democratise knowledge by making academic work accessible to anyone, anywhere, at any time. OA also supports the reuse of research under clear, open licenses, encouraging innovation and collaboration.

Why Publish Open Access?

Publishing OA isn’t just about visibility - it’s about impact. Here’s why it matters:

  • Boosts reach and recognition: OA articles are more discoverable, leading to higher citation rates and broader influence.
  • Bridges global knowledge gaps: Researchers and institutions in low-resource settings can access cutting-edge findings without financial barriers.
  • Fuels collaboration: Freely available research fosters interdisciplinary and international partnerships.
  • Accelerates discovery: Open access speeds up the translation of research into real-world solutions.
  • Meets funder requirements: Many research funders now require OA publishing as part of their grant conditions.

Open Access Publishing Models

There are three main pathways to publishing Open Access:

Model Description
Gold OA The publisher makes the article freely available immediately upon publication. Authors typically pay an Article Processing Charge (APC).
Green OA Authors self-archive a version of their article (often a preprint or postprint) in an institutional or subject repository. No cost to the author, but embargo periods may apply.
Diamond OA Both authors and readers pay nothing. These journals are often supported by institutions, consortia, or volunteer efforts. Authors usually retain copyright.

Other OA Publishing options

Depending on who the author is, medical consultants may be able to use their CME money. See GH Continuing Medical Education (CME) Reimbursements policy which states the below:

Publication fee for research articles which:

  • The Specialist is the primary author or primary investigator; and
  • That the publication is primarily affiliated with Grampians Health; and
  • The research publication contributes to CPD points with the relevant Specialist College.
